This is a gathering place for Dobyns Bennett High School Class of 1960... We continue to gather once a month at O'Charley's Restaurant on Eastman Road Kingsport Tn, around 20 or more each month. It is really neat that after all these years, we continue to build on our friendships and love to gather together! If you graduated with us, a year or two before us or after us, we would love to see you! I'm sure we would have a lot to talk about! Please consider joining us for First Friday!!

John Shelton Reed's Mom

Barbara, I'm sure class members in Kspt. know about John's mother, Pinky Reed who died July 10 but don't know that he and Dale moved to a retirement community in Chapel Hill. The address is: 3140-V/ Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill NC 27517 if anyone wants to send them a card. I see them every now and then in Columbia when they do a speaking engagement or book signing. Anyway, hope you are doing well and let me know if you have some days you could come see me. Love, zollie (harrison) miles

Thanks, Zollie!

John Shelton Reed's Mom

Barbara, this is the mother of John Reed who graduated with us in 1960. Cris Moorehouse
Alice Margaret Greene Reed 92 died peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2009.
Born in Hornell, NY on Jan. 8, 1917
Resided in Kingsport, TN and Departed on Jul. 10, 2009 at Preston Place in Kingsport from complications following a recent heart attack.
Alice Reed was the fourth of five daughters of Bessie and Floyd Greene.
Born in Hornell, New York, she grew up in Rochester, New York.
She majored in English literature at the University of Rochester,

where she was asked to join Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. After
teaching high school English for two years, she married Shelton Reed.
They lived in New York City for four years before Dr. Reed entered
military service, and they moved to his hometown of Kingsport in 1946.

Mrs. Reed loved reading and gardening. She belonged to the Kingsport
Junior Book Club and to the Little House and Garden Club. She served
on the Kingsport Public Library Commission and the Kingsport Symphony
Committee. She also enjoyed her family antiques and genealogical
research, and belonged to the Long Island chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution and the Association for the Preservation of
Antiquities. She was a parishioner of St. Paul s Episcopal Church
for over sixty years, and was active in the Altar Guild.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dr. John Shelton Reed of
Kingsport; a sister, Margaret Kindig, of Pittsford, New York; her
children and their spouses, John and Dale Reed of Chapel Hill, North
Carolina; Lisa Alther of Burlington, Vermont; William and Cici Reed of
Asheville, North Carolina; Michael and Kathy Reed of Kingsport,
Tennessee; and Jane and Greg Shaw of Charlottesville, Virginia; and
seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Lesley Jones,
her long-time physician, and Nina White, her caregiver, for their
wonderful loving care.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends send contributions to
the charities of their choice.

A memorial service will be announced at a future date.

God bless us everyone!

50th Class Reunion Meeting July 20th, 2009

We will be meeting this coming Monday night at the Alumni Field House
(behind the J. Fred Johnson football field scoreboard). You can park
on that street, or we can arrange transportation to and from
meeting... just let one of us know what you need. Sue Shaulis Thomas
will be directing the meeting... I have reserved the space from 6 p.m.
till 9 p.m. leaving time to get there, assemble for the meeting and
time afterwards to clean up. If anyone would like to bring some
light refreshments (lemonade, tea, cookies, etc.), please let Sue know
at 247-4458. Something simple!! The front entrance where the memorial bricks are
is the entrance, there is an elevator so it won't be hard to get
upstairs... there is also a staircase if you prefer the steps. Please
come! We need as much input as possible to get our act together for this really big 50th
class reunion!!! I'm excited, and I hope you are too. We have a
good head start on finding our DBHS Class of 1960 classmates... thanks
to Sue's hard work and those who called to get up to date addresses/
emails/etc. I am sorry I won't be there Monday night, but I will be
at the beach with my daughter's family... Thanks again! BC

First Friday July 3rd 2009

We had another great turnout, and a lot of fun at our First Friday July. Sarah Sims Housley came from Lynchburg VA for our lunch, and Zollie Harrison Miles came from Lexington SC! I'm impressed, and I hope you are too! I'm so proud of our group. We had a very large group again, Nancy Ellis Baldree, Sharon Deatherage Fults, Janrose Dotson Gilliam, Anne Morrison Garber, Phil Baldwin Todd and her hubby Ray, Doris Cox, Cris Moorehouse and wife Theona, Carolyn Rice Cameron and hubby John, Chris McConnell Barker, Carol Leeper Killian, Doug Killian, Linda Lamberth Robinson, Carolyn Devault Tichenor, Celia Lyons Falin (is this your first time?), a friend from class of 1959 Judy Williams Simpson... myself and a classmate of many of our class from elementary school Patsy Mills. I always am afraid I've left someone out... I pray not! Thanks for coming...

We will be meeting at the Alumni Field House on Monday, July 20th, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. We will try to have some light refreshments there. (Any volunteers?) We will be discussing our information gathering process, etc. Anne Morrison Garber is spearheading a video/picture project, and that involves bringing us some of your favorite pictures from our high school years/past reunions/etc. to include in the project. Anne says that you can scan them and send them to her at "amgarb@aol.com" or bring them to the meeting (she can scan them and return to you). Sue has a database of all the corrected names/addresses/phone numbers/email addresses... and we will have those at the meeting as well.

MISS MARGARET PHLEGAR

MESSAGE FROM BOB REAGAN: when people ask me how long i've been married, my immediate response is, "27 happy years and 27 out of 42 ain't bad." well, today is my 42nd anniversary, and to celebrate ann and i went to a B&B in pearisburg, va, tuesday thru today.

the B&B is the inn at river bend, and you need to check it out at www.innatriverbend.com it is sooooo nice and very reasonably priced. the view shown on the website does not do it justice.

the reason i'm telling you this is because this morning i visited with one of the residents of pearisburg, margaret phlegar. if that name doesn't ring a bell, get out your 1958 maroon and grey and look at the picure of your sophomore english teacher.

MISS PHLEGAR celebrated her 96th birthday two weeks ago, and she is in reasonably good health for her age. i could tell she did not remember me, but we had a great visit. she did light up when i mentioned the names of some of her fellow DB faculty members to include ROBERT FANSLOW, BLANCHE CRIGGER, BOB DEVAULT, DR. ELERY LAY.

thought you all might like to hear about one of my all-time favorite teachers. hope everyone has a great fourth of july weekend.

BOB REAGAN
