This is a gathering place for Dobyns Bennett High School Class of 1960... We continue to gather once a month at O'Charley's Restaurant on Eastman Road Kingsport Tn, around 20 or more each month. It is really neat that after all these years, we continue to build on our friendships and love to gather together! If you graduated with us, a year or two before us or after us, we would love to see you! I'm sure we would have a lot to talk about! Please consider joining us for First Friday!!

William P. Haynes funeral (George Hayne's father)

Sue Shaulis Thomas, Marlene Snyder McConnell, Vivian Eversole Brown and I were able to be at the First Presbyterian Church today... they attended Mr. Haynes' funeral, and I came later so we could all visit with George afterwards. It was very beautiful, and George's daughter gave a wonderful eulogy - really about all 4 of her grandparents - and everyone was impressed. George
looked good, and he appreciated that we came. God bless us everyone!

John Shelton Reed's Mom

Barbara, I'm sure class members in Kspt. know about John's mother, Pinky Reed who died July 10 but don't know that he and Dale moved to a retirement community in Chapel Hill. The address is: 3140-V/ Carolina Meadows, Chapel Hill NC 27517 if anyone wants to send them a card. I see them every now and then in Columbia when they do a speaking engagement or book signing. (behind the J. Fred Johnson football field scoreboard). You can park
on that street, or we can arrange transportation to and from
meeting... just let one of us know what you need. Sue Shaulis Thomas
will be directing the meeting... I have reserved the space from 6 p.m.
till 9 p.m. leaving time to get there, assemble for the meeting and
time afterwards to clean up. If anyone would like to bring some
light refreshments (lemonade, tea, cookies, etc.), please let Sue know

class reunion!!! I'm excited, and I hope you are too. We have a
good head start on finding our DBHS Class of 1960 classmates... thanks
to Sue's hard work and those who called to get up to date addresses/
emails/etc. I am sorry I won't be there Monday night, but I will be
at the beach with my daughter's family... Thanks again! BC

First Friday July 3rd 2009

We had another great turnout, and a lot of fun at our First Friday July. Sarah Sims Housley came from Lynchburg VA for our lunch, and Zollie Harrison Miles came from Lexington SC! I'm impressed, and I hope you are too! I'm so proud of our group. We had a very large group again, Nancy Ellis Baldree, Sharon Deatherage Fults, Janrose Dotson Gilliam, Anne Morrison Garber, Phil Baldwin Todd and her hubby Ray, Doris Cox, Cris Moorehouse and wife Theona, Carolyn Rice Cameron and hubby John, Chris McConnell Barker, Carol Leeper Killian, Doug Killian, Linda Lamberth Robinson, Carolyn Devault Tichenor, Celia Lyons Falin (is this your first time?), a friend from class of 1959 Judy Williams Simpson... myself and a classmate of many of our class from elementary school Patsy Mills. I always am afraid I've left someone out... I pray not! Thanks for coming...

We will be meeting at the Alumni Field House on Monday, July 20th, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. We will try to have some light refreshments there. (Any volunteers?) We will be discussing our information gathering process, etc. Anne Morrison Garber is spearheading a video/picture project, and that involves bringing us some of your favorite pictures from our high school years/past reunions/etc. to include in the project. Anne says that you can scan them and send them to her at "amgarb@aol.com" or bring them to the meeting (she can scan them and return to you). Sue has a database of all the corrected names/addresses/phone numbers/email addresses... and we will have those at the meeting as well.

MISS MARGARET PHLEGAR

MESSAGE FROM BOB REAGAN: when people ask me how long i've been married, my immediate response is, "27 happy years and 27 out of 42 ain't bad." well, today is my 42nd anniversary, and to celebrate ann and i went to a B&B in pearisburg, va, tuesday thru today.

the B&B is the inn at river bend, and you need to check it out at www.innatriverbend.com it is sooooo nice and very reasonably priced. the view shown on the website does not do it justice.

the reason i'm telling you this is because this morning i visited with one of the residents of pearisburg, margaret phlegar. if that name doesn't ring a bell, get out your 1958 maroon and grey and look at the picure of your sophomore english teacher.

MISS PHLEGAR celebrated her 96th birthday two weeks ago, and she is in reasonably good health for her age. i could tell she did not remember me, but we had a great visit. she did light up when i mentioned the names of some of her fellow DB faculty members to include ROBERT FANSLOW, BLANCHE CRIGGER, BOB DEVAULT, DR. ELERY LAY.

thought you all might like to hear about one of my all-time favorite teachers. hope everyone has a great fourth of july weekend.

many of you probably subscribe to jeff fleming's newsletter. if not, you will enjoy this eulogy by graham clark about tom coughenour.

it is so well done, and it brings back so many fond memories of tom.

sometime take thirty minutes to listen to it. i've never met graham clark, but i thought he did a fantastic job. there are three parts: the third part is the eulogy.

Bob Reagan

Tom Coughenour was a legendary track coach at Dobyns-Bennett High School. Graham Clark, D-B football coach, and longtime friend, delivered a humorous, yet moving eulogy about a man who touched the lives of thousands of Kingsport student athletes during his career.

many of our reunions, but always seemed to try! I'm sorry we didn't know about his illness soon
enough to send cards and letters of support. I would like to send a card, and I'll bring one to our First Friday July 3rd lunch. And wait till you see the two pictures! God bless us everyone! BC

First Friday, July 3rd 2009 and REUNION

Several people said they would be able to come to a First Friday gathering on July 3rd, so we decided to go for it!! O'Charley's at 12:30 p.m. We will be continuing our discussion about finding classmates and about a formal REUNION meeting on Monday, July 20th, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. We will meet at the DBHS Alumni Fieldhouse at the scoreboard end of the J. First Friday June 5th 2009

Well, wonder of wonders! I went to the First Friday lunchat O'Charley's on Eastman Road today half expecting that no one would be there... except me and Sue!!! Was I ever surprised!! Hooray! This was the best turnout I've ever been to... thank you guys! You're my heroes!!! We had a great visit. Sue talked about our next meeting, the week of July 20th, more to follow on that. Everyone turned in their information sheets. We had a delicious lunch as usual. I believe the count was 24... Linda Bernell Harris Crussell, who has never come before but came as a favor for Janrose Dotson Gilliam, Nancy Ellis Baldree, Margaret Ketron Colley, Jane Beck Harris, Chris McConnell Barker, Doris Cox, Margaret Bray Slemp, Cris and Theona Moorehouse, Sue Shaulis Thomas, Frankie Sullins Lucas (back for a second time), Carolyn Rice Cameron, Sandy Kaylor Ekren, Sondra Dotson Bridwell, Marlene Snyder McConnell, Martha Allen, Kathy Morse Parham, Linda Lamberth Robinson, Carol and Doug Killian, Pat Thompson Donaldson and husband Jim and myself. Ooops... I think I have forgotten someone... I was sure there were 24!! Please forgive me if I forgot YOU! :)

Looks like too many people will be away / not able to come to Doug and Carol's on the 20th, so we will re-schedule for sometime in September. Maybe less rushed, etc.

I still haven't figured out how to get the pictures from LAST year's visit to the Killians. There are some good pictures in there, so I won't stop until I have them uploaded!!

God bless us everyone!!

Cris and Theona Moorehouse are our traveling pair... they have logged a lot of miles and gone to a lot of beautiful places in these United States. Today he sent me this email.

Killian's Shangrila June 20th

Classmates Carol Leeper and Doug Killian have an absolutely beautiful place near Mooresburg TN (about an hour from my house in Kingsport), and they have invited us down to visit again. A large group of DBHS Class of 60 classmates made it down there last August. Tommy and I were unable to go since he just finished his chemo, and his immune system was so low. He loved it there, he called it "Shangrila". Carol says June 20th is a good date... so mark that on your calendars. There will be barbeque sandwiches with several sides to choose from, all for $7.
If you wish to bring a dessert to share, please do so... I'm sure we can all slip off our "diet" for one day... surely!! I will be posting some pictures taken from last August's gathering... on the website... if I can figure out how to do it!!!

God bless us everyone!
BC

First Friday June 5th 2009

Hey guys... it's time for another First Friday event! We have so much fun, and we're also working now... working on telephoning our classmates with information we had gathered at our last reunion. Sue Shaulis Thomas made copies of those information sheets, we each took one, and we are calling to verify information once again. NOTE FROM SUE: M.Colley, C. Killian, B. Coughenour, C. Cameron, J. Dotson, S. Bridwell, F. Lucas, D. Plott, C. Tichenor, R. Deason, M. McConnell, L. Robinson, K. Parham and J. Beck, please return your (1) Class Information sheet and (2) the Information Corrections sheets to Sue Thomas at the First Friday Meeting (June 5) or mail them immediately to Sue Thomas, 1528 Watauga St., Kingsport, TN 37664.

Don't worry if you were unable to contact all of your people. This is just the first attempt. Sue will compile a list of persons who have not been contacted, and we will then see if any of our classmates know how to contact "the missing."

Thanks Sue, for spearheading our efforts!

God bless us everyone!

Ben Hunter's Garden

Please go to www.timesnews.net/tearsheets and look for article "THE NEW GROWTH" on the front page of the FAMILY section C. There is Ben's face shining out from under his broad brimmed hat, and his words about his gardening skills! I think we may need a visit to Ben's Gardens to get some hints!!

Graham Clark's Eulogy

Today was a good day... my brother was able to upload Graham's eulogy from Tommy's funeral onto YouTube today. I had been wanting to hear it again... I guess I never realized just how much Tommy meant to him. You may or may not be interested, but if you are, you just GOOGLE
Graham Clark's Eulogy or Tom Coughenour, and it should come up. There are three parts:
the first part has PT 1 in the title, the second doesn't have any number with it, and Pt 3 has a number on it. Once again, the family is bathed in love and support and peace beyond understanding.

God bless us everyone!

Sunday, May 17, 2009

At our last First Friday (May), Sue Shaulis Thomas gave out a page to each of us with names of our classmates as they were listed at our last reunion. She asked us to call those people, find out if their information needed to be updated, and if they wanted information about our 50th (FIFTIETH!!!) reunion sent to them. I haven't been able to get everyone called yet on my page, but I've enjoyed talking with Fred Churchill last week, and today with Eddie Chase (except now he is Ed :)... I spoke with Ed as I drove to Fredericksburg VA for a visit with my Grands and to see my 13yr old Hannah play Grandmother Mermaid in "The Little Mermaid"! Anyway, it was fun talking with Fred and Ed, and I look forward to connecting with the other classmates on my sheet! Barbara

Sue Shaulis Thomas, Katie Taggart Driskell and I met for lunch Tuesday to discuss some options for our 'information gathering', 'website presence', etc.   We discussed our google group and the possibility of our own Blogging Site.  Here it is, now I just have to learn how to use it!
Barbara

Thursday, May 7, 2009

I will be trying to learn as much as I can about BLOGGING as we use this site. This is for Dobyns Bennett High School Class of 1960 graduates and classmates... we will be using it for dissemination of  class reunion information for our upcoming 50th class reunion, October 8th, 9th and possibly 10th, 2010.  I look forward to sharing information with you. Keep in touch!
